Australian Institute for Infectious Disease
About Project
The Australian Institute for Infectious Disease (AIID) is a world-class initiative designed to strengthen Australia’s capability in infectious disease research, public health, and pandemic preparedness. Developed through a collaboration between the University of Melbourne, the Doherty Institute, and the Burnet Institute, and supported by the Victorian Government, AIID brings together leading expertise to drive innovation in vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics. The institute aims to position Victoria as a global leader in infectious disease research and response.
At the heart of the project is a state-of-the-art research facility located in Melbourne’s Biomedical Precinct, scheduled for completion by 2029. Backed by up to $400 million in government funding, the facility will accommodate over 1,000 scientists, researchers, and public health experts. It will feature advanced infrastructure including high-containment laboratories, robotic biobanking, human infection challenge units, and AI-powered public health genomics, enabling faster and more effective responses to emerging diseases and global health threats.
AIID is designed as a collaborative ecosystem, integrating research, education, and industry partnerships to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into real-world health solutions. By combining cutting-edge technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global partnerships, the institute will play a critical role in preventing future pandemics, improving health outcomes, and driving innovation across the biomedical sector. This makes AIID a cornerstone project in building a resilient, future-ready healthcare and research infrastructure for Australia and beyond.
